Manchester United will lodge a formal complaint with Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following a series of controversial decisions during their Premier League draw at Bournemouth.
Senior officials at Old Trafford are furious after what they believe was another costly VAR error in a match that ended level.
The incident at the centre of the dispute was the second half when winger Amad Diallo appeared to be wrestled to the ground inside the Bournemouth penalty area while Manchester United were leading 1-0.
Referee Stuart Attwell waved play on despite being positioned close to the challenge.
Ryan Christie for Bournemouth, turning around what United believe should have been a two-goal advantage. VAR checked the decision, but officials chose not to overturn the on-field call.
United believe the challenge on Diallo was a clear foul and that a penalty should have been awarded.
There is also frustration that the incident was similar to a later challenge, which resulted in a penalty and a red card against United.
Defender Harry Maguire was dismissed for bringing down Evanilson inside the box, allowing Junior Kroupi to score from the resulting spot kick and secure a draw for Bournemouth.
United’s view is that the foul on Diallo mirrored the offence committed by Bournemouth defender Adrien Truffert earlier in the match.
Caretaker manager Michael Carrick did not hide his frustration after the final whistle.
Carrick described the decision as astonishing and questioned how one penalty could be given while the other was ignored.
Club officials have backed their manager and believe the incident had a major influence on the outcome.
United had already scored once from the penalty spot earlier in the game through captain Bruno Fernandes.
They believe a second penalty would likely have given them a decisive two-goal lead midway through the half.
However, Bournemouth were level within moments and the match ended in a draw.
The complaint will reportedly be raised directly with PGMOL chief Howard Webb.
United have previously contacted the refereeing body this season about incorrect decisions.
Those include a disputed red-card incident involving Nathan Collins during a match against Brentford, a denied penalty against Wolverhampton Wanderers and a disallowed goal scored by Lisandro Martinez against Burnley.
Director of football Jason Wilcox is expected to formally raise the latest issue with Webb.
The club are also likely to question the nine minutes of stoppage time that were added at the end of the match.
The draw leaves United third in the Premier League table but under pressure from the chasing pack in the race for Champions League qualification.
Liverpool, Aston Villa and Chelsea remain close behind as the season approaches the final stretch.
