Vinicius brace helps Arbeloa make Real Madrid history against Manchester City

Manchester City fell to a 2-1 defeat against Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, losing 5-1 on aggregate.

Alvaro Arbeloa has now become the first Madrid manager to win each of his first four matches in the knockout stage of the competition.

Madrid were the first to threaten when Gianluigi Donnarumma came off his line to thwart Federico Valverde.

City responded swiftly, with Jeremy Doku’s effort ricocheting off Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian then parried Rodri’s shot behind for a corner.

Bernardo Silva was sent off in the 21st for a handball that denied a goalscoring opportunity. Vinicius Junior converted the resulting penalty to give Madrid the lead.

Erling Braut Haaland had a chance to equalise, but Courtois was equal to the task.

The Norwegian restored parity in the 41st minute, picking out the far corner after Doku’s cross kindly fell into his path.

Haaland forced substitute goalkeeper Andriy Lunin into an early second-half save.

Donnarumma made a fine save at the other end, parrying Aurelien Tchouameni’s glancing header over the bar.

Lunin showed impressive reactions to keep out Rayan Ait-Nouri’s powerful shot in the 78th minute.

Vinicius sealed Madrid’s victory in stoppage time, volleying Tchouameni’s precise delivery past Donnarumma.

Los Blancos will face either Bayern Munich or Atalanta in the quarter-finals.
