Chelsea dug deep in extra time to beat Wrexham 4-2 in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The hosts took the lead in the 18th minute after Sam Smith latched onto a long ball and finished past Robert Sanchez.

Alejandro Garnacho could’ve restored parity for the Blues after he got onto Pedro Neto’s cross at the back post, but his volley flew wide.

The visitors drew level after 40 minutes. Garnacho’s low effort was cleared off the line, but it bounced off Arthur Okonkwo’s back after being cleared and into the net.

Garnacho could’ve fired the visitors ahead after the break, but flashed his effort wide. Jorrel Hato then dragged a shot wide minutes later.

The Red Dragons retook the lead in the 78th minute after Callum Doyle flicked in Josh Windass’ strike.

Josh Acheampong restored parity for Chelsea after he scored from close range.

Sanchez denied George Thomason late in the game, before the tie swung in Chelsea’s favour.

George Dobson was sent off for a reckless challenge on Garnacho, and the hosts were reduced to 10 men.

Max Cleworth could’ve won the game at the death for Wrexham, but Sanchez parried his long-range effort away.

Garnacho fired the Blues ahead in extra time after he latched onto Dario Essugo’s inviting cross.

The Argentine could’ve increased the margin from a free kick, but Okonkwo tipped his effort over the bar.

Lewis Brunt thought he had drawn the hosts level after he met Kieffer Moore’s flick-on at the far post. The goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR check.

Joao Pedro completed the scoring in the 131st minute to send Chelsea into the quarter-finals.
