Wolves claim second league win as Gomes duo down Villa

Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa in the Premier League at Molineux on Friday, thanks to second-half goals from Joao Gomes and Rodrigo Gomes.

The host had the first chance of the game in the second minute from a free-kick, but Mateus Mane sent his curling effort wide of the post.

Wolves were almost rewarded with the opener after Yerson Mosquera headed back across from a free-kick for Toti Gomes to meet, but he fired his effort wide.

The visitors mustered their first attempt of the game as Matty Cash whipped in an inviting cross for Douglas, but Jose Sa comfortably collected his strike.

Both sides failed to create any other chances, and the game remained goalless after the first 45 minutes.

Wolves resumed after the break with intent and were rewarded with the opener on the hour mark after Jackson Tchatchoua fired in a cross.

Adam Armstrong flicked it to the path of Joao Gomes, who finished past Emiliano Martinez.

Ian Maatsen could’ve restored parity for Villa in the 76th minute after Ross Barkley found him, but his effort was straight at Sa.

Rodrigo Gomes completed the scoring, firing home a loose ball to seal Wolves’ second Premier League victory of the season.

Wolves have gone past Derby County’s record low of 11 points in a Premier League season, but relegation is still on the agenda.

However, Wolves have added another feather to their cap by effectively knocking Villa back down into a fight for the top four, just a few weeks after they were rated as title contenders.

Villa are three points ahead of Man Utd, who have a game in hand and a superior goal difference. Liverpool and Chelsea are three points behind United.

Villa have to play all three teams, plus they face Manchester City on the final day of the season. It will be a painful end to a promising season if the team doesn’t improve.
