Manchester City moved to within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal after a tense 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium today.
Pep Guardiola’s side knew they had to capitalise after Arsenal dropped points in midweek, and they did just enough to keep the pressure firmly on the leaders.
City began with urgency and were rewarded inside 15 minutes through Nico O’Reilly.
Omar Marmoush drove forward from midfield and slipped the ball into O’Reilly’s path. He fired low past Nick Pope, who got a hand to it but could not keep it out.
Newcastle responded positively despite the fatigue of their midweek European trip and quickly restored parity.
Following a corner, Lewis Hall collected the loose ball on the edge of the area and struck a shot that deflected off Rayan Ait-Nouri, wrong-footing Gianluigi Donnarumma on its way into the net.
The equaliser briefly unsettled the hosts, but City regained control before the half-hour mark.
Erling Haaland was released down the right and delivered a precise cross towards the far post, where O’Reilly rose highest to guide a header back across Pope and into the corner.
It was a clinical contribution from the midfielder, whose movement between the lines repeatedly troubled Newcastle’s defence.
City carried their lead into the interval but were unable to pull clear after the break.
Newcastle remained competitive and threatened sporadically, with Dan Burn having a header ruled out for offside.
The visitors committed more bodies forward in the closing stages as they chased a second equaliser.
City continued to create chances, with Pope producing important saves to deny Haaland and Phil Foden.
Tension gripped the Etihad in stoppage time when Harvey Barnes found space inside the area.
Donnarumma reacted sharply to push away Barnes’ low effort, preserving City’s narrow advantage in the dying moments.
The final whistle was met with visible relief from Guardiola and his players.
The victory extends City’s strong home record against Newcastle and maintains their momentum in the title race.
Arsenal now look over their shoulders with the gap reduced, knowing City are building form at a decisive stage of the campaign.
The message was clear – City are firmly back in pursuit and ready to apply sustained pressure in the weeks ahead.
