Man United players dismayed by Ratcliffe comments, Casemiro particularly upset

Manchester United players are unsettled by controversial comments made by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe about immigration in the United Kingdom.

His remarks have not gone down well among members of the first-team squad, many of whom come from diverse backgrounds.

Ratcliffe faced criticism after stating in a televised interview that the UK had been colonised by immigrants while discussing economic challenges linked to welfare and migration.

The 73-year-old issued an apology on Thursday, but reports suggest the damage has already seeped into the club.

One senior player was said to be lost for words upon hearing the comments, while another source close to the squad suggested Ratcliffe had a lot to answer for in the eyes of several players.

Casemiro is believed to be among those most upset. The Brazilian midfielder is expected to depart Old Trafford at the end of the season.

He felt disrespected not only by the immigration remarks but also by Ratcliffe’s previous comments describing certain players as inherited from the previous footballing regime.

Those earlier remarks referenced players such as Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund. United have ditched several of those players.

Ratcliffe’s direct interaction with players has been limited since acquiring a minority stake in the club, although he has occasionally addressed the squad during visits to Carrington.

With United not scheduled to play again until their Premier League trip to Everton later this month, players have been granted time away from training as the ongoing fallout plays out.

Man United released a statement reaffirming their commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, highlighting the club’s All Red All Equal campaign and various community initiatives.

However, the statement made no direct reference to Ratcliffe or his comments.

The Football Association has launched an investigation into whether Ratcliffe’s remarks could bring the game into disrepute.
