Haaland scores first Premier League goal at Anfield as Man City beat Liverpool 2-1 to stay in the title race

Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.

Bernando Silva slipped Erling Haaland through inside the first minute, but Alisson Becker quickly came off his line to deny him.

Abdukodir Khusanov headed Silva’s cross high as the visitors started the game on the front foot.

Liverpool’s Alexis McAllister threaded a pass to Mohamed Salah after 25 minutes, but he was unable to get a shot away.

City continued to dominate but could not make it count until the break, while Liverpool failed to muster a shot on target.

Liverpool started the second period with more attacking intent. Dominic Szoboszlai called Gianluigi Donnarumma into action with a shot from outside the area, before Hugo Ekitike curled wide.

Antoine Semenyo’s strike was saved by Alisson, with City looking to regain control.

The Reds quickly responded with another chance as Salah floated an inviting cross into the box, but Ekitike headed wide.

Szoboszlai broke the deadlock in the 74th minute, leaving Donnarumma rooted to the spot with a fierce free-kick.

Silva restored parity for the Cityzens, guiding Haaland’s header beyond Alisson.

Haaland completed the turnaround for the visitors, scoring from the penalty spot to register his first league goal at Anfield.

Szoboszlai was sent off for a last-man tackle on Haaland, compounding the defending champions’ woes.

City have now completed the league double over Liverpool for the first time since the 1936/37 season.

Pep Guardiola’s side are six points adrift of leaders Arsenal, who defeated Sunderland on Saturday.
