Salah makes Premier League history as Liverpool end winless run with 4-1 win over Newcastle

Liverpool ended their five-game Premier League winless run after claiming a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield on Saturday.

There was no attempt at either end until the 18th minute, when Nick Pope saved Hugo Ekitike’s left-footed shot from outside the area.

Harvey Barnes came close to breaking the deadlock, but his effort hit the post. Pope made a superb stop to keep the scoreline goalless, punching Ekitike’s attempted chip away.

Newcastle broke the deadlock with a fast break. Gordon fired into the far corner to edge the visitors ahead.

Ekitike restored parity after 41 minutes. Florian Wirtz showed brilliant footwork to cut back for the Frenchman to apply the finish.

The striker completed the turnaround with a sublime finish two minutes later, receiving a long pass from Milos Kerkez to slot the ball home to make it 2-1.

Alexis McAllister glanced a header wide from a free-kick as Liverpool finished the first half strongly.

Ekitike should have given Liverpool a two-goal cushion early in the second half, sending his effort wide from a one-on-one situation.

Wirtz made it 3-1 after the hour mark. He combined with Mohamed Salah before swivelling a first-time finish past Pope.

Salah now has 10 goals and 10 assists against the Magpies, becoming the first player in Premier League history to reach double figures for both goals and assists against a single opponent.

The German midfielder nearly returned the favour shortly afterwards, but Salah fluffed his lines.

Ibrahima Konate capped the scoring in stoppage time, sealing an emphatic victory for the Reds.
