Man City 2-0 Galatasaray: Haaland back on target as City book Champions League last-16 place

Manchester City secured a 2-0 win over Galatasaray in their final Champions League group stage game at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

City made a promising start as Rayan Ait-Nouri crossed the ball to Erling Braut Haaland, but he headed wide.

Haaland made amends in the 10th minute, dinking the ball over goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir for his first goal from open play in nine games.

Bernardo Silva squared to Nico O’Reilly, but Cakir made a brilliant save to keep out his effort.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was called into action for the first time moments later, denying Victor Osimhen from breaching his goal.

Rayan Cherki soon made it 2-0, side-footing Jeremy Doku’s pass into the bottom-left corner.

Phil Foden squandered a golden chance to add to the Cityzens’ advantage on the stroke of half-time, blazing over the bar from inside the box.

The first chance of the second period fell to Omar Marmoush. He timed his run to latch onto a pass, but shot straight at Cakir.

The visitors responded, but Osimhen’s first-time shot was saved. Galatasaray ended the game strongly, but Donnarumma stood tall in goal to preserve his clean sheet.

City have booked automatic progression to the round of 16 after finishing eighth in the standings.
