Chelsea secured a place in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday night with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Napoli.
A second-half brace from Joao Pedro completed a comeback that confirmed a top-eight finish and spared Chelsea the uncertainty of a February play-off.
The result represented a significant milestone for a young Chelsea side still learning the demands of elite European competition.
They arrived in Naples knowing that defeat could undo weeks of strong work in the league phase.
Chelsea started confidently and were rewarded inside 20 minutes.
Reece James’ dangerous free-kick struck Juan Jesus’ arm, and Enzo Fernandez converted the resulting penalty with authority.
That opener briefly silenced the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona but also sparked a sharp response from Napoli.
Antonio Conte’s side grew into the contest and began to exploit space in wide areas.
They equalised through local midfielder Antonio Vergara, who produced a moment of individual brilliance to escape pressure and beat Robert Sanchez.
Napoli turned the match around shortly before half-time. Mathias Olivera’s low cross found Rasmus Hojlund, who guided a first-time finish past Sanchez to give the hosts control at the interval.
Chelsea entered the break frustrated and facing the prospect of dropping outside the automatic qualification places. However, the turning point came immediately after the restart.
Cole Palmer was introduced and changed the game’s rhythm. Chelsea enjoyed more control of possession and began to find space between the Napoli lines.
Palmer slid a pass into Joao Pedro just after the hour mark, who shifted the ball onto his right foot and fired an unstoppable equaliser from the edge of the area.
The goal drained belief from the home crowd and reopened the contest.
Napoli pushed forward again, knowing elimination loomed without another goal. That urgency left them vulnerable on the counter-attack.
Palmer again provided the incision with eight minutes remaining, releasing Joao Pedro into space.
The Brazilian kept his composure and slotted the ball under Alex Meret to complete the turnaround.
Napoli threw on Romelu Lukaku in desperation, but Sanchez denied him in stoppage time. The final whistle confirmed contrasting fates.
Chelsea celebrated progression and a first away win at this stage of the competition in over three years.
Napoli are out – their hopes undone by a ruthless second-half response.
