Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is hopeful Bruno Guimaraes’ injury is not serious after the midfielder limped off in the 3-0 Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven last night.
The 28-year-old picked up the knock early in the first half after a collision with Mauro Junior. Guimaraes continued playing before going down holding his ankle.
The Newcastle captain was eventually replaced on the stroke of half-time, with Lewis Miley taking his place. Howe confirmed Guimaraes’ ankle injury in his post-match press conference.
“Yeah, a little bit sore – it’s an ankle problem,” Howe said.
“A little bit of swelling in his ankle. Having just seen him, we hope it’s not serious. Difficult to know.
“I think Bruno is the type of player who never wants to come off. He always wants to play, so the fact that he has come off is a worry for us.
“We’ll do everything we can to get him fit as quickly as possible.”
Newcastle enjoyed an impressive European night at St James’ Park, as they comfortably defeated PSV to clinch a Champions League knockout round play-off spot.
Yoane Wissa put his side ahead in the eighth minute by coolly lifting the ball over the goalkeeper.
The former Brentford star then turned provider to tee up Anthony Gordon for Newcastle’s second.
Harvey Barnes put the game to bed after the interval, as he hit the target from inside the box after wriggling away from Yarek Gasiorowski.
The emphatic victory came at a cost for the Magpies, with Guimaraes picking up a concerning injury.
The Brazilian has been their most important player this season. He has made 14 direct goal contributions in 33 appearances across all competitions.
With eight goals in 21 Premier League appearances, Guimaraes is currently one of the top scorers in the English league.
