Bodo/Glimt produced one of the most remarkable results of the Champions League season as they defeated Manchester City 3-1 in the Arctic Circle.
The victory not only marked the Norwegians’ first win over English opposition in the competition but also dealt a serious blow to Man City’s hopes of automatic qualification.
Played on an artificial surface in freezing conditions, the contest quickly became another difficult chapter in City’s troubled start to the year.
Bodo/Glimt set the tone with an intensity and clarity of purpose that City struggled to match.
The breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute when Ole Didrik Blomberg’s looping cross reached Kasper Hogh at the far post, where the forward headed calmly past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
City barely had time to regroup before the hosts struck again.
A defensive error in midfield allowed Blomberg to break forward once more and square for Hogh, who swept home his second with a composed first-time finish.
The Norwegians continued to threaten, pressing aggressively and exploiting City’s defensive uncertainty.
Hogh went close to completing a first-half hat-trick, but his close-range effort was smothered on the goalline.
Erling Braut Haaland endured a frustrating return to his homeland, with a clear chance before the interval drifting wide.
Ma City emerged unchanged for the second half, but their situation worsened almost immediately.
Jens Petter Hauge produced a moment of brilliance, cutting inside and curling a superb strike into the top corner to put Bodo/Glimt firmly in control.
Rayan Cherki briefly offered City hope with a swift response, but any momentum was short-lived.
Rodri was sent off soon after for two quick yellow cards, leaving City with too much ground to recover.
Bodo/Glimt remained disciplined and dangerous on the break, playing with confidence and freedom.
They threatened to add further goals as City laboured in the closing stages.
The final whistle was met with scenes of celebration inside Aspmyra Stadion, sealing a famous European night for the Norwegian champions.
Man City side struggled to cope with the occasion, conditions and pressure, and were fortunate not to concede more.
The result leaves City facing the prospect of missing out on the top eight, with qualification now far from secure.
Bodo/Glimt kept alive their play-off ambitions with a performance built on belief, bravery and execution.
