Palace shatter club transfer record to sign Brennan Johnson from Tottenham

Crystal Palace have completed the club-record signing of forward Brennan Johnson from Tottenham Hotspur on a four-and-a-half-year contract.

Palace confirmed Johnson will be eligible for selection for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Newcastle United.

The deal is worth close to £35 million, making it the most expensive signing in Palace’s history and one of Tottenham’s highest sales.

Johnson leaves Tottenham after struggling for consistent opportunities under manager Thomas Frank this season.

Manager Oliver Glasner has been eager to strengthen his attacking options as Palace balance domestic commitments with European football.

The Palace manager welcomed the speed of the deal and highlighted Johnson’s pace and goalscoring threat as key attributes.

Johnson becomes a significant addition following Eberechi Eze’s summer departure, with Palace seeking greater penetration and directness in the final third.

Ismaila Sarr and Yeremy Pino have carried much of the creative burden this season, particularly in the number ten roles within Glasner’s system.

Johnson is expected to provide competition across the front line, with his ability to operate on either flank offering tactical flexibility.

Daichi Kamada, Justin Devenny and Eddie Nketiah now face increased competition for attacking places.

Johnson began his career at Nottingham Forest, playing a central role in their promotion to the Premier League in 2022.

His most defining moment for Spurs was last May, when his goal in the Europa League final delivered their first trophy in 17 years.

Johnson finished last season as Tottenham’s top scorer with 18 goals in all competitions.

Despite that return, his role diminished following the managerial change, making a move increasingly likely.

The forward’s arrival also offers cover during Sarr’s absence at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Johnson has earned more than 40 senior caps for Wales and was part of their squad at the 2022 World Cup.
