Chelsea 2-2 Bournemouth: Palmer penalty not enough as fragile Blues falter under the lights

Chelsea’s poor run continued at Stamford Bridge as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Bournemouth tonight.

The home supporters’ frustration was evident by the final whistle, with Enzo Maresca’s team now having just one win from their past seven Premier League matches.

Bournemouth left London with renewed belief, extending their own resilience in difficult circumstances and showing enough threat to feel they could have taken more.

The visitors struck first inside six minutes when Antoine Semenyo’s long throw caused immediate panic, allowing David Brooks to bundle the ball past Robert Sanchez from close range.

Chelsea responded with purpose and levelled through Cole Palmer, who converted from the spot after a VAR review judged Semenyo to have caught Estevao Willian in the area.

Momentum briefly swung decisively when Enzo Fernandez curled a fine effort into the corner to give the hosts a 2-1 lead midway through the first half.

That advantage lasted only four minutes, with Chelsea once again exposed from a throw-in as Semenyo’s delivery was flicked on and Justin Kluivert arrived unmarked to tap home.

The opening period remained chaotic, with Bournemouth registering 14 first-half shots and repeatedly unsettling a Chelsea defence that continues to look fragile.

Sanchez was forced into several sharp saves before the break as Bournemouth pressed aggressively and refused to retreat despite defensive concerns of their own.

Maresca reacted at half-time by introducing Reece James and Pedro Neto, seeking greater control and authority down the right flank.

Chelsea enjoyed more sustained pressure after the restart and thought they might be awarded another penalty when the ball was handled in the area, only for VAR to wave away the appeals.

The hosts grew increasingly dominant as the hour mark passed, with Fernandez blazing over from close range and Trevoh Chalobah testing Djordje Petrovic with a header.

Discontent resurfaced in the stands when Palmer was withdrawn for Joao Pedro, a decision that drew boos and chants directed at Maresca.

Despite the pressure, Bournemouth held their shape and remained a threat on the counter, with Semenyo continuing to offer an outlet and physical presence.

The visitors almost stole the points late on when Enes Unal met a cross in added time, only to send his effort over the bar from a promising position.

The draw leaves Chelsea reflecting on another missed opportunity, having now dropped more points from winning positions than any other side in the league this season.
