Manchester United 1–1 West Ham United: Magassa’s late strike cancels Dalot’s goal at Old Trafford

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham United in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Thursday.

West Ham began the game with attacking intent, but failed to test Senne Lammens in the United goal.

It took United 23 minutes to register their first shot on target, with Bryan Mbeumo whipping the ball towards the top corner. Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola tipped it over.

The hosts were close to getting the opening goal before the half-hour mark, when Joshua Zirkzee’s header was cleared off the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The ball then fell to Matheus Cunha, whose overhead kick was blocked. It broke kindly to Bruno Fernandes, but his volley narrowly drifted wide.

Jarrod Bowen evaded his markers at the other end, but his effort was deflected onto the gloves of Lammens.

United ended the first half on the front foot but could not open the scoring.

Diogo Dalot gave United the lead in the 57th minute, taking possession after Casemiro’s shot was deflected into his path and smashing the ball home.

Dalot is now the fourth Portuguese player to score a Premier League goal for Man United at Old Trafford, joining Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Bruno Fernandes.

West Ham reacted well to going behind and restored parity seven minutes from time.

Bowen’s flicked header from a corner was cleared off the line by Noussair Mazraoui but only as far as Soungoutou Magassa, who fired the ball into the net.

Fernandes missed the chance to score a winner for United, failing to hit the target from close range.

Just before the final whistle, the Portuguese squandered another opportunity to secure a victory for the hosts.

The result leaves United eighth in the standings, two points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea. West Ham remain 18th.
