Carragher urges Salah to show leadership after latest Liverpool collapse: ‘I only ever hear him speak when he gets MOTM or needs a new contract’

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has challenged Mohamed Salah to step forward as a vocal leader in the club’s hour of need.

The Sky Sports pundit accused the Egyptian of going missing publicly during Liverpool’s worst domestic under manager Arne Slot.

Liverpool suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday on Salah’s 300th appearance for the club.

It was the Reds’ sixth loss in seven Premier League matches, leaving them languishing in the bottom half of the table.

Virgil van Dijk spoke to the media afterwards, admitting the team is a mess, but Carragher insists the burden should not fall solely on him.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, the former Liverpool defender said Salah must take greater responsibility during the club’s slump.

Carragher said: “On the back of all these defeats, it’s always Van Dijk who comes out and speaks. A year ago this weekend, Salah wasn’t shy about talking when the club hadn’t offered him a contract.

“I only ever hear him speak when he gets man of the match or when he needs a new deal. I’d like to see him come out as one of the leaders and legends of Liverpool.”

Salah gave several interviews last season as speculation swirled before he eventually signed a two-year extension in April.

He delivered 29 goals and 18 assists in the league during that campaign, winning the Golden Boot and Playmaker awards.

But this season has been far less fruitful. He has bagged just four goals and two assists in 12 league appearances.

Carragher also expressed reservations about Van Dijk’s leadership, although he believes he should remain captain.

He urged supporters to retain faith in Slot, arguing the manager deserves time and respect after winning the title in his first season.

“There should be no talk of the manager being out of a job,” Carragher said. “The unconditional support (Jurgen) Klopp had isn’t quite there for him, and that surprises me.”
