Bayern Munich have won their opening 16 competitive fixtures of 2025/26, setting a new winning run for the start of a season by a team in Europe’s top five leagues.
Manager Vincent Kompany is now being described as the best thing since sliced bread, while Bayern have been touted as potential Champions League winners.
Although their 2-1 victory at Paris Saint-Germain last night was an impressive result, the hyperbole which followed it was a tad over the top.
It is worth remembering that it is just over 12 months since Kompany’s limitations were exposed as Barcelona dismantled Bayern in the same competition.
His tactical ineptitude was laid bare again earlier this year when Celtic nearly eliminated them in the knockout play-off round.
Fast forward to today, and numerous media outlets have been blowing smoke up Kompany’s backside. While Bayern played well against PSG, the love-in is over the top.
If he guides them to the Champions League title, Kompany will be worthy of the praise which is already being thrown in his direction.
However, given that the performances against Barcelona and Celtic are still fresh in the memory, it’s much too soon to be putting him on a managerial pedestal.
