Wirtz and Ekitike shine as Liverpool smash Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 to end losing streak

Liverpool recorded their second Champions League victory of the season with a 5-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday evening.

Frankfurt opened the scoring before the half-hour mark. Florian Wirtz was dispossessed, allowing Mario Gotze to find Rasmus Kristensen, who applied the finish.

Conor Bradley should have restored parity for Liverpool in the 32nd minute, but he could not get his effort on target.

Former Frankfurt man Hugo Ekitike levelled the scores, finishing a brilliant counter-attacking move.

Virgil van Dijk put Liverpool ahead, heading home from Cody Gakpo’s corner-kick. Ibrahima Konate added another before half-time with a towering header.

Liverpool made a substitution after the restart, replacing Alezander Isak with Federico Chiesa.

The substitute nearly scored with an acrobatic finish after Wirtz headed into the area, but his effort drifted wide.

Frankfurt had goalkeeper Michael Zetterer to thank as he made a good save to prevent Wirtz from compounding their woes.

He could not stop Gakpo from adding to the Reds’ advantage, with Wirtz putting the ball on the plate for him to score.

Wirtz was the provider again in the 70th minute. He combined with Dominik Szoboszlai, who fired the ball ferociously into the net.

Frankfurt created a chance seven minutes from time, when Fares Chabi fired the ball wide of the right post.

Mohammed Salah should have put the icing on the cake for Liverpool when he was picked out in the penalty area, but he produced a weak shot.

The victory ends Liverpool’s four-game losing streak. The Reds return to Premier League action at Brentford on Saturday.
