Lineker backs Haaland to break Shearer’s Premier League scoring record

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has been tipped to break the Premier League scoring record held by Alan Shearer.

Former Premier League striker Gary Lineker believes the Norwegian, who signed a deal with the Cityzens until 2034, can surpass Shearer’s tally of 260 goals in the English top flight.

Lineker said (via Sky Sports), “If he does stay the length of his contract, which is enormously long, I think he’ll probably beat Alan’s record.

“Haaland is incredible. He’s a beast. He’s such a superb finisher.”

Lineker said it is still too early to crown Haaland the best finisher in the Premier League, considering he still has a sizeable gap to close.

However, Haaland has been furiously closing the distance, bagging nine goals in seven league appearances this term, his latest being the winner in the 1-0 victory over Brentford.

The former RB Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund ace is now up to 94 goals in 104 Premier League outings, and Shearer’s record could be in sight by 2030.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher already lauded Haaland as the greatest goalscorer to ever play in English football, claiming he is on a completely different level to Sergio Aguero.

He is on course for the European Golden Boot, although he is contending for the prize with Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe.

Only Antoine Semenyo (six goals) is proving a worthy rival in the Premier League, and he will likely struggle to keep up with Haaland’s scoring pace.

Mohamed Salah has suffered a decline this term following his exploits of last season.
