Striker Kylian Mbappe starred as Real Madrid beat Kazakhstan side Kairat Almaty 5-0 in the Champions League at Almaty Ortalyk Stadion on Tuesday.
The hosts started the game with intent, creating two chances. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved Dastan Satpayev’s header before Jorginho fired an effort off target.
Madrid were able to ride through the early storm and took the lead in the 25th minute through Mbappe’s penalty, following a foul on Franco Mastantuono.
Madrid nearly made it 2-0 after 35 minutes, when Mbappe floated a pass to Mastantuono, whose effort was blocked.
They pushed hard for their second goal before the interval but failed. Vinicius Junior had an effort saved by goalkeeper Sherhan Kalmurza before Mbappe’s effort flashed across the face of the goal.
The Frenchman doubled the record champions’ lead in the 52nd minute, collecting the ball from Courtois’ clearance before dinking the ball over the goalkeeper.
He had the chance to complete his hat-trick a few minutes later, but directed his effort wide.
Kairat pushed for a comeback, creating two consecutive chances, but Courtois was equal to the task. The hosts were awarded a penalty after the hour mark, but the VAR overturned it.
Madrid made it 3-0 in the 73rd minute as Rodrygo showed brilliant footwork to combine with Arder Guler, who set up Mbappe for the finish.
The 26-year-old has now netted three away hat-tricks in the competition, the joint-most with Filippo Inzaghi.
Seven minutes from time, substitute Eduardo Camavinga netted Madrid’s fourth goal with a deft header before Brahim Diaz completed the scoring in stoppage time.
