‘Players really doubting the system’ – Gary Neville delivers brutal assessment after Manchester United defeat at Brentford

Gary Neville has delivered a scathing assessment of the current state of Manchester United under manager Ruben Amorim. 

The Red Devils slumped to their third defeat in six Premier League matches this season, losing 3-1 to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday. 

Neville said he felt the players were starting to doubt Amorim’s system. 

He told Sky Sports: “I’m very worried. The performance that we saw and the result at Brentford means that you feel the Chelsea game was skewed by the sending off.

“You start to look at the Chelsea win less positively. That’s just football.

“I think there are a lot of United fans coming out of that ground last Saturday, including me, thinking Brentford away, Sunderland at home next week, has a real opportunity to get nine points on the board.

“But the Brentford game was a really poor performance and a real worry.

“I felt for the first time, seeing the players’ faces and body language, that there might be an element of players really doubting the system and what’s going on.”

Amorim’s future at Old Trafford has become a centre of speculation following the Brentford defeat. 

The club are reportedly considering replacements, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in direct contact with former England manager Gareth Southgate. 

However, United officials are adamant that Amorim retains their support (h/t BBC Sport). Their stance could quickly change if results don’t improve soon. 

Despite significant summer investments, the Red Devils are 14th in the table after collecting just seven points from six matches. 

Since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November last year, Amorim has recorded just nine victories in 33 league matches.

His system is clearly not working, but he refuses to change his tactics. 

If Amorim fails to win the next home fixture against newly-promoted Sunderland, the club may be forced to pull the plug on his tenure.
