Palhinha’s late strike rescues Spurs draw against Wolves and sets new Premier League record

Tottenham Hotspur were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday.

Wolves had the game’s first chance when Jorgen Strand Larsen’s header inside the six-yard box went wide.

Spurs responded in the 15th minute, as Xavi Simons delivered a cross into the area for Mohammed Kudus, but goalkeeper Sam Johnstone saved his header.

Both sides had chances to score before the half-hour mark. Lucas Bergvall’s right-footed shot from inside the area failed to hit the target, and Hwang Hee-chan suffered the same fate moments later.

Wolves continued to threaten and squandered another chance in the 38th minute, as Jhon Arias’ missed the target.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Matt Doherty almost silenced the home fans when his right-footed shot hit the post.

Wolves took the lead in the 54th minute. Guglielmo Vicario saved Ladislav Krejci’s header, but it hit Joao Palhinha, allowing Hugo Bueno to score from close range.

Bueno nearly made it 2-0 in the 74th minute, when he collected a pass from Arias, but Vicario parried his first-time shot away.

The hosts continued searching for the equaliser and almost got it when Palhinha’s long-range effort hit the crossbar.

The Portuguese salvaged a draw for Tottenham when he buried the ball into the bottom corner deep into stoppage time.

According to OptaJoe, Palhinha’s strike was the eighth goal scored in the 90th minute or later in the Premier League on Saturday – the most in a single day in the competition’s history.

Tottenham missed the chance to climb to second in the table. They are three points clear of Arsenal, who play at Newcastle United on Sunday.
