From Liverpool’s last-minute win against Atletico Madrid to Paris Saint-Germain’s annihilation of Atalanta, the Champions League delivered plenty of exciting action on the second day of Matchday 1.
Here is a quick rundown on the results of Wednesday’s games.
PSG 4-0 Atalanta: Defending champions start with a bang
PSG kicked off their defence of the title with a 4-0 victory over Atalanta.
Marquinhos set things in motion after scoring from close range off Fabian Ruiz’s pass. They doubled the lead before half-time after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia fired a powerful shot into the net.
Nuno Mendes made it 3-0 for the home side with a sharp left-footed strike. The Portuguese left-back had a spectacular game.
Goncalo Ramos pounced on a loose back pass from Raoul Bellanova to cap off a terrific win for Luis Enrique’s side.
Ajax 0-2 Inter Milan: Marcus Thuram at the double
Marcus Thuram stood tall as Inter Milan recorded a comprehensive 2-0 victory against Ajax to begin their Champions League campaign on a high note.
The French attacker netted back-to-back solid headers off Hakan Calhanoglu’s corner kicks to ensure Inter returned home with three points.
Goalkeeper Yann Sommer secured a clean sheet, making an excellent 1v1 save against Mika Godts.
Bayern Munich 3-1 Chelsea: Harry Kane’s double dismantles Chelsea
Harry Kane headlined a thumping 3-1 victory for Bayern Munich against Chelsea with a glorious brace.
A dreadful own goal from Trevoh Chalobah put Bayern in front before Kane doubled the lead from the penalty spot following a foul induced by Moises Caicedo.
Cole Palmer halved the deficit with a stunning finish, but the Blues shot themselves in the foot after Kane pounced on a lacklustre Malo Gusto’s back pass to produce a clinical finish.
Robert Sanchez pulled off a couple of top saves against Kane and Michael Olise to prevent the evening from turning into a nightmare for Enzo Maresca’s side.
Liverpool 3-2 Atletico Madrid: Virgil van Dijk with a last-gasp winner
Liverpool secured yet another last-minute victory as they edged out Atletico Madrid 3-2 at Anfield, with Virgil van Dijk scoring in injury time.
The Reds rattled the Spanish giants from the outset, with Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah scoring inside six minutes.
History repeated itself when Marcos Llorente, who dismantled the Reds back in 2020, netted a stunning brace to equalise for Diego Simeone’s side.
However, Van Dijk netted a thumping header from Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner kick in the added time to snatch a thrilling victory for the Merseysiders.
