Liverpool maintained their perfect Premier League record as they grabbed an injury-time winner at Burnley to reclaim their place at the top.
Arsenal responded perfectly to their 1-0 defeat at Anfield, claiming a commanding 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest.
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ miserable start to the new campaign continued as Newcastle United condemned them to their fourth league defeat in as many matches.
We look at some of the major talking points from the weekend’s Premier League action.
Nick Woltemade hits the ground running at Newcastle
Newcastle United lost Alexander Isak to Liverpool in the summer. They received a record £125 million fee for him, but his exit was a blow.
However, replacement Nick Woltemade, who the club signed from Stuttgart in a deal worth up to £69m, made an instant impact at St James’ Park.
The German marked his debut with a goal that sealed Saturday’s home game in favour of Newcastle against Wolves.
Donnarumma’s dream debut
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola threw new signing Gianluigi Donnarumma straight in goal, and he impressed with his display.
Donnarumma kept a clean sheet and produced a spectacular save to deny Bryan Mbeumo.
His instant impact prompted Wayne Rooney to question why United didn’t pursue a deal for the former Paris Saint-Germain star instead of Senne Lammens.
Liverpool find a way to win despite not being at their best
Despite making several blockbuster signings this summer, Liverpool have not been entirely convincing with their performances in the Premier League.
However, the Reds have still won all their games. Mohamed Salah grabbed the winner at Burnley deep in stoppage time after Hannibal Mejbri handled the ball.
Slah’s emphatic penalty moved the Reds three points clear at the top of the table.
Potter under pressure after Tottenham humiliation
West Ham United slumped to their third Premier League defeat in 2025-26 on Saturday, with Tottenham Hotspur scoring three unanswered goals.
The latest defeat has put the scrutiny back on Graham Potter, who earned himself a respite after leading his team to a 3-0 victory against Forest before the international break.
The English boss must improve results soon if he wants to stay in his role at the London Stadium.
Madueke silences critics
Not many people were convinced when Arsenal splashed £52m to sign Noni Madueke.
However, his recent displays suggest the Gunners have spent wisely on the 23-year-old.
Madueke capped a great week with an excellent performance in Arsenal’s one-sided triumph over Forest, four days after scoring his first goal for England against Serbia.
