Having guided Tottenham Hotspur to their first trophy in ages last season, Ange Postecoglou was unceremoniously sacked by the club.
Postecoglou’s success in the Europa League was no real surprise – he always wins silverware in his second season at a club.
However, a tally of 22 defeats in the Premier League proved to be his undoing, although a never-ending succession of injuries didn’t help matters.
Tottenham decided to go in a different direction, as was their prerogative, but Postecoglou was never likely to be out of work for too long.
Nottingham Forest’s decision to dispense with Nuno Espirito Santo’s services opened the door for the Australian to return to the Premier League.
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has long been an admirer of Postecoglou and Nuno’s outbursts over the past few weeks played right into his hands.
Given that Marinakis is extremely high-maintenance and Postecoglou is a prickly character, there could be fireworks at the City Ground over the next few months.
Marinakis has funded Forest’s resurgence back to the Premier League and driven them onto the European stage again.
They now have a proven winner in charge – a man whose CV is littered with successes. However, the current squad does not suit his tactical style.
Postecoglou and Forest are a match made in heaven, given all the elements in play. Buckle up and enjoy the ride.
