The second line of Daniel Levy’s farewell message had all the hallmarks of a man who has a rather lofty opinion of himself.
If the now former Tottenham Hotspur chairman believes this nonsensical waffle, he clearly hasn’t been paying attention.
Let’s kick things off by giving credit where credit is due. A shiny new stadium? Yes. Great training facilities? Yes. Financially sound? Yes.
However, Tottenham have won just two trophies during Levy’s time in charge, neither of which came in competitions categorised as ‘the highest level’.
Whichever way you flower it up, those ‘achievements’ don’t warrant Tottenham’s place in the Premier League’s so-called ‘Big Six’.
Tottenham have not won the English league title since 1960/61. Their tally of two titles is matched by Preston North End, Derby County, Burnley and Portsmouth.
While Levy undoubtedly made Tottenham a heavyweight off the pitch, his efforts have not translated into regular success on it.
The most successful clubs deliver in both metrics. Football is not just a business – for all the bluster in his exit message, Levy failed to grasp that concept.
