Napoli plotting surprise move for Kobbie Mainoo

Napoli are eyeing a shock move for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, according to the Daily Mail.

The Serie A champions have emerged as unexpected suitors for the 20-year-old, who has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Negotiations for a new contract have also stalled, with Mainoo seeking a substantial salary increase following his rise to prominence.

The academy graduate is currently at a crossroads as speculation about his United future continues to grow heading into the final days of the summer transfer window.

He has yet to make a single appearance in United’s first two Premier League matches this season, with manager Ruben Amorim opting to pair Bruno Fernandes with Casemiro in the heart of the midfield.

With next year’s World Cup on the horizon, Mainoo will be keen to feature consistently to boost his chances of playing for England.

Several clubs have reportedly shown interest in Mainoo, although it is unclear whether United are open to an exit.

Napoli have now positioned themselves as firm suitors and are expected to formally hold talks with United.

Napoli are on the verge of securing an initial loan deal to sign Rasmus Hojlund with an obligation to make the move permanent next summer.

Having also snapped up Scott McTominay from United last summer, they have developed a harmonious relationship with their English counterparts.

The Red Devils’ asking price has dropped from around £70 million to £45m to facilitate a potential exit.
