Newcastle United’s frustrating summer transfer window has sparked plenty of amusement amongst fans of rival Premier League clubs.
Having ended their long wait to win a trophy and qualified for the Champions League, the club needed to make their mark in the transfer window.
At the time of writing, their headline signings are Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale – players who don’t set the pulse racing.
Newcastle have missed out on several transfer targets this summer. Star striker Alexander Isak has also thrown a spanner in the works by angling for a move to Liverpool.
While financial regulations have not helped Newcastle’s cause, that excuse cannot mask what has been a thoroughly underwhelming summer at St James’ Park.
Changes behind the scenes have played a key role. Newcastle have lost their Chief Executive Officer and Sporting Director and not adequately replaced them.
Newcastle are now chasing elite players. This puts them head-to-head with big hitters such as Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.
Manchester United can also be thrown into the mix, despite their recent struggles.
Newcastle are not in the same ballpark from a reputational perspective, regardless of what their fans think.
And then there’s the management team – Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall. If a player has elite ambitions, are they likely to be attracted by the prospect of playing under them?
The club has some big calls to make if it is serious about progressing to the next level. A managerial change would not be a bad place to start.
