Inter Miami provide update on Lionel Messi after he suffers hamstring injury against Necaxa

Lionel Messi picked up a hamstring injury during Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup penalty shoot-out win over Club Necaxa. 

The Major League Soccer club has provided an update, saying Messi underwent medical tests to evaluate the extent of the injury. 

The results confirmed a minor muscle injury in his right leg.

The club did not provide a timeline for his return, but he is expected to miss Miami’s next Leagues Cup match against UNAM Pumas on Wednesday. 

Messi fell to the ground after coming into contact with Necaxa’s Raul Sanchez and Alexis Pena early in the game. 

The Argentine sought medical attention but was forced off after 11 minutes. Federico Redondo replaced him.

Messi’s injury will likely be a big blow for Miami, who are aiming to reach the second round of the competition with a positive result against Pumas. 

The former Barcelona star has been a key player for the Herons this season, bagging 24 goals and 10 assists in 31 appearances across all competitions. 

Miami relied heavily on Messi at the recent FIFA Club World Cup, where he played over 90 minutes in all four matches.

The World Cup winner led his team to Leagues Cup success in 2023, scoring in normal time and converting his penalty in the final against Nashville SC.
