Nottingham Forest have had a £25m bid for Manchester City midfielder James McAtee rejected.
Forest are keen to strengthen their squad following Anthony Elanga’s move to Newcastle United and view McAtee as a priority target.
Talks have been ongoing, and despite the initial offer being rejected, Forest’s interest remains firm as they close in on the signing of Dan Ndoye from Bologna.
McAtee has just one year left on his current deal at the Etihad Stadium, but City are not under pressure to sell and are pointing to his development and contributions as justification for their £40m valuation.
The midfielder made 27 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring seven goals, although he started only eight times under Pep Guardiola.
Forest are the most likely Premier League destination if he leaves. Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt are also interested in signing him.
City believe McAtee’s record supports their £40m stance, citing comparisons to Cole Palmer, who joined Chelsea last summer for a similar fee.
The club also highlight his recent achievement in captaining England to European Under-21 Championship glory.
Forest are looking to reshape their attacking unit rather than seek direct replacements. McAtee’s versatility allows him to operate as an attacking midfielder or on the flanks.
Although City remain firm on their asking price, McAtee’s representatives are confident that a deal could still happen before the transfer window closes.
They believe the player’s desire for regular opportunities could eventually shift the balance, even if City continue to insist they are not in a position where a sale is necessary.
Forest may now need to return with an improved offer if they are to secure one of England’s most highly-rated young midfielders before the deadline.
