Serie A giants AS Roma are progressing in their talks to sign Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios after submitting an improved bid (h/t journalist Fabrizio Romano).
The Giallorossi have tabled a fresh offer worth €27 million plus add-ons, closing the gap with the Brazilian club’s valuation.
Roma are now awaiting a response from Palmeiras, who have been insisting on a fixed fee of €30m.
Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest and Benfica have been credited with an interest in Rios, but Roma are leading the race after submitting a concrete proposal.
The Colombian international is keen on a move to the Stadio Olimpico, having agreed personal terms with the Italian outfit.
Roma have identified Rios as a key addition for their project under manager Gian Piero Gasperini, who is an admirer of the Colombian’s talent.
With Leandro Paredes joining Boca Juniors, the Giallorossi are looking to strengthen the midfield in the transfer window.
Meanwhile, a deal for Lens midfielder Neil El Aynaoui has been put on hold, with Roma focusing on securing an agreement for Rios.
The 25-year-old stole the spotlight with his impressive performances at the Club World Cup, helping Palmeiras reach the quarter-final.
Mainly operating as a deep-lying playmaker, Rios has been a vital cog in Palmeiras’ engine room, racking up eight goal contributions in 36 games this season.
He is also a prominent fixture for the Colombian team, playing a pivotal role in the runners-up finish in the Copa America last year.
With Bryan Cristante and Manu Kone already in the ranks, Rios will transform Roma’s midfield into a robust unit.
Roma are also in talks to sign Flamengo full-back Wesley and Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson.
