Real Madrid are considering stepping up their pursuit of Ibrahima Konate, with a move dependent on whether they can sell players already deemed surplus to requirements.
The Liverpool centre-back has been on Madrid’s radar for some time and is now seen as a viable target following his refusal to extend his contract at Anfield, which expires next year.
Spanish outlet AS reports that Madrid are seriously considering a move for Konate.
They are unwilling to meet Liverpool’s £43 million valuation, but could firm up their interest if funds are raised from outgoing transfers.
If those exits are completed in the coming weeks, Madrid would look to use the funds to facilitate a move for the French defender.
Arsenal’s William Saliba is regarded as Madrid’s dream signing, but his long-term contract means they must explore more attainable alternatives.
Konate, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021, has emerged as the most realistic option and is open to the switch.
Madrid are hoping to capitalise on the uncertainty surrounding his future, especially as Liverpool are keen to avoid a repeat of the Trent Alexander-Arnold contract saga.
They have already signed Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, but Alonso wants another centre-back, especially after a lacklustre showing against Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semi-final.
Konate remains high on the list, but Madrid’s ability to table a bid this summer will hinge on how successful they are in moving on the players Alonso no longer counts on.
If they manage to do so, the Frenchman could yet arrive in Madrid a year ahead of schedule.
