The tiny cameras on the referees’ ears provide a different angle to the game. FIFA recently trialled the technology at the Club World Cup.
The footage used by DAZN has impressed both broadcasters and fans by showcasing the speed and skill of players in real time.
Talks have taken place between the Premier League and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to explore expanding trials into domestic competitions.
Referee cameras could be tested during the Premier League Summer Series in the United States (US) this month, which features Manchester United, Everton, West Ham United and Bournemouth.
The technology would still require club approval for use in official league matches and is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season.
Even if adopted, they may not feature in every game.
However, the league’s rights holders, especially with a new £3 billion broadcast deal involving Sky Sports and TNT Sports, are enthusiastic about the potential added value of the footage.
Jarred Gillett wore a head-mounted camera during Crystal Palace’s game against Manchester United in May 2024, although footage was not shown live.
Previous trials with chest-mounted GoPros by Rob Jones and Peter Bankes during the Premier Summer Series two years ago also went unaired.
The technology involves cameras fixed to the referee’s right ear, connected to a microphone and transmitter in their shorts, with wires running under the shirt.
FIFA tested various set-ups and found the ear-mounted perspective to be the most effective.
Following positive feedback, FIFA is considering the use of referee cameras at the 2026 World Cup.
