Italy have appointed former AC Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso as their new head coach, as confirmed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
Gattuso succeeds Luciano Spalletti, who was sacked last week following Italy’s heavy defeat against Norway in a World Cup qualifier.
Claudio Ranieri appeared to be the favourite to take over, but he decided to continue his role as an advisor at AS Roma.
Stefano Pioli, Daniele De Rossi, and Fabio Cannavaro were also linked with the job, but the Azzurri have opted for Gattuso.
A robust midfielder during his playing days, Gattuso was an integral part of the historic Milan side under Carlo Ancelotti and the national team that won the 2006 World Cup.
However, Gattuso’s recruitment has sparked criticism from fans due to his underwhelming managerial career.
The former midfielder has managed Milan, Napoli, Marseille and Valencia, but he has failed to make his mark with any of them.
Gattuso was notorious for his hot-headed nature throughout his playing career, and he has also built a reputation as a demanding and aggressive-minded manager.
There are questions about his potential and the lack of achievements, but Gattuso will look to give his best in his new adventure, given his unwavering allegiance to the national team.
“Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football, the shirt is like his second skin,” said FIGC president Gabriele Gravina.
“His motivations, professionalism and experience will be fundamental in taking on the next challenges of the national team.
“He knows the importance of our objectives, and I thank him for his readiness and dedication in accepting this challenge.”
The Azzurri have experienced a significant downfall since their 2020 European Championship victory.
Their hopes for next year’s World Cup are hanging in the balance as they are third in their qualifying group.
