While returning to a former club can be a tempting proposition, history is littered with examples of why it is generally a bad idea.
The ‘never go back’ adage immediately sprang to mind when the news broke that Jack Grealish is on his way out of Manchester City this summer.
An emotional return to his former club Aston Villa was immediately touted, with some media outlets suggesting it would be an ideal move for him.
In fairness, it is easy to make a strong case for Grealish to return to Villa Park, primarily because of manager Unai Emery.
The Spaniard’s track record of rejuvenating players who struggled elsewhere could make Villa an even more appealing proposition for Grealish.
However, the bitter reception Grealish received from Villa fans when City visited last December highlights that a return would not be straightforward.
If the 29-year-old secured a move to Villa this summer, the pressure on him to deliver would be immense. Every move, on and off the field, would be scrutinised.
Grealish needs a landing spot where he can perform without the overbearing pressure a move to Villa Park would bring.
Serie A has proven to be a safe haven for Premier League players seeking a new start. It may well be the best option for Grealish.
