Bayern Munich have officially confirmed the signing of German international defender Jonathan Tah on a free transfer.
The 29-year-old centre-back joins the Bundesliga giants after a successful spell at Leverkusen, where he played a pivotal role in their remarkable 2023/24 title-winning campaign.
Bayern’s interest in Tah had been an open secret for weeks, and after negotiations between the two parties progressed smoothly, a four-year contract until 2029 was finalised.
With defensive reinforcements high on Bayern’s priority list this summer, Tah emerged as a natural target.
Having amassed over 200 Bundesliga appearances and 20 caps for the German national team, he brings experience and leadership qualities to a Bayern backline that has lacked both.
Comfortable in both a back four and a three-man defence, Tah offers tactical flexibility and a commanding aerial presence.
Speaking after the announcement, Jonathan Tah shared his enthusiasm for the next chapter in his career.
“I’m very happy to be at Bayern,” Tah told Bayern’s official website.
“I want to take on responsibility here and work hard every day so that we’re successful as a team and win lots of trophies together.”
Tah had been strongly linked with a Bosman move to Barcelona before Bayern swooped in to take one of Germany’s most reliable defenders to the Allianz Arena.
After failing in their pursuit of Florian Wirtz, Bayern’s acquisition of Tah is their first piece of business this summer, and they are expected to pursue further reinforcement.
With Bayern likely to bid Leroy Sane goodbye, the Bavarians are aiming to bring in a new left-sided winger, with Brighton & Hove Albion’s Kaoru Mitoma on their wishlist.
AC Milan’s Rafael Leao and Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo have also been linked with moves to Munich this summer.
