Several people injured after car hits Liverpool fans during title celebrations

A 53-year-old man has been detained following a serious incident in Liverpool city centre, where a vehicle struck multiple pedestrians during celebrations of Liverpool’s Premier League title win.

Emergency services rushed to Water Street shortly after 6.00 pm on Monday after a car collided with a sizeable group of people.

The incident occurred as thousands of supporters gathered in the city for an open-top bus parade commemorating the league win.

Footage from the scene showed a heavy emergency services presence, including police, ambulances and a fire engine. The area was cordoned off, with debris scattered along the road.

In a statement issued Monday night, Merseyside Police confirmed: “We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre.

“We were contacted just after 6.00 pm today, Monday, May 26, following reports that a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street.

“The car stopped at the scene, and a male was detained.”

There has been no official confirmation of the number or severity of injuries yet. The incident happened during a planned 10-mile parade.

While the cause of the collision remains under investigation, police have urged the public to avoid speculation while inquiries continue.

Liverpool have not issued a statement, but they are liaising with local authorities.

The report will dampen what was supposed to be a happy occasion for the Reds.

Liverpool won only their second title of the Premier League era and wanted to celebrate it with the fans after the COVID-19 pandemic prevented a trophy parade in 2020.
