McTominay and Lukaku strike to seal 2024/25 Serie A title for Napoli

Napoli duo Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku scored as the Partenopei beat Cagliari to secure their fourth Serie A title.

Despite Inter Milan’s result, Antonio Conte’s side deservedly claimed the 2024/25 Scudetto.

McTominay, who left Manchester United last summer and has been a revelation for Napoli, unsurprisingly played a key role in the victory.

The Red Devils made a mistake letting the Scotsman go, and he has been reminding them of their errant ways with his remarkable performances.

McTominay broke the deadlock with a fantastic overhead kick that sent the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium into rapturous delight.

He has now recorded 12 goals and six assists in 34 league appearances to help Napoli to their second Scudetto in the past three seasons.

Lukaku also played a crucial role. Following a difficult start to life in Naples, the Belgian has caught fire, especially in the last few months, to spearhead another Italian club to the title.

He showed why he is one of the best strikers in the world with an exquisite goal.

Lukaku controlled a long ball from the back and outwrestled Yerry Mina before leaving him for dead with a magnificent chop back inside and finish.

It was the former Chelsea and Man Utd centre-forward’s 22nd goal as he once again delivered the goods for Antonio Conte.

Conte is one of the few managers who can maximise his ability.

The goal for Napoli now is to try and find consistency. They followed their last title-winning campaign with a horrendous defence and must avoid the same fate next term.

Conte is already making massive demands that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis cannot deliver, and there are rumours he could walk this summer.

However, De Laurentiis should do everything to satisfy Conte and keep him around for another season.

If this season has proven anything, it is that he delivers silverware when he has the right tools. Napoli have laid the foundations for sustained success. But the continuity hinges on keeping Conte.

If he stays, the Partenopei will head into next season as clear favourites again.

Lose him, and the cracks could reappear just as quickly as they were sealed. For now, Napoli can celebrate a deserved fourth Serie A title.
