Liverpool have held advanced talks with Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong over a summer move as they look to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold (h/t Florian Plettenberg).
The England international will leave Anfield when his contract expires at the end of the season.
A free transfer to Real Madrid has already been agreed, but Liverpool are wasting no time sorting out their issues at right back.
Frimpong has built a reputation as one of the best in the business over the past couple of years playing under Xabi Alonso’s leadership.
He helped Leverkusen to a historic domestic double last season and is a key part of the team that is on course to finish second this term.
Several clubs are monitoring the Dutchman, but Liverpool are leading the chase and could wrap up a deal soon.
The Reds are ready to activate his release clause, which Sky Germany claims is worth just under £30 million.
Frimpong is capable of operating as a traditional right-back and as an advanced wing-back. He offers versatility and attacking flair.
The 24-year-old has played 190 games for Leverkusen, bagging 30 goals and 44 assists, underlining his threat in the final third.
He was also part of the Netherlands squad that reached the semi-final of the 2024 European Championship in Germany.
Liverpool considered their options before launching a move for Frimpong.
There were talks that academy graduate Conor Bradley could succeed Alexander-Arnold, but Arne Slot wants to add more experience and depth to the position.
Liverpool steamrolled to the Premier League title in Slot’s debut campaign, and the club want to reward the Dutchman with a war chest this summer, especially after a quiet transfer window last year.
Frimpong has previously lauded Liverpool as ‘a great club with history’ and could be Slot’s first summer addition.
The Reds are also expected to target a centre-back, a midfielder and a striker this summer.
