Manchester United succumbed to a disgraceful loss against West Ham United at Old Trafford today.
The defeat left the Red Devils in 16th place in the Premier League.
Man Utd have lost 17 league games in a single season for the first time in 51 years. The loss to West Ham also makes it nine home league defeats for the first time since 1962/63.
Graham Potter tactically outwitted manager Ruben Amorim, and the latter took responsibility for the abysmal result.
Amorim has lost more than half of his Premier League matches since taking charge (W6, D6, L13) and has questioned whether he is the man to lead the club forward.
The Portuguese tactician was seething from the loss and did not hold back in his press conference.
Amorim said they had lost the feeling of a big club that does not want to lose home matches before asking for reinforcement in the summer and eventually turning the spotlight on himself.
“It is not the players’ fault,” he said (via the Daily Mail). “It is my fault. I am responsible. If we cannot change that really fast, we should give our place to different people.”
Amorim’s job is to instil a winning culture, and he is failing spectacularly. He is walking a tightrope with his reckless comments.
No one forced him to leave Sporting CP and join Man Utd mid-season. He knew what he walked into, and the blame lies squarely with him.
The players have not improved. His system does not particularly fit this squad. He talks about responsibility yet vents in press conferences like a man lost, not leading.
Meanwhile, Vitor Pereira walked into Wolverhampton Wanderers mid-season and sparked a turnaround.
No one is asking Amorim for miracles, but identity, structure and belief are the bare minimum. He has provided none of that.
Amorim may survive the summer, but Man United must be ruthless if there is no sign of a turnaround at the start of next season. The badge demands better.
