Mason Mount’s scintillating late cameo for Manchester United in the Europa League sparked wild celebrations at Old Trafford last night.
The Red Devils were labouring in the second leg of their semi-final against Athletic Club before Mount entered the fray in the 62nd minute.
Mount, Amad Diallo and Luke Shaw were introduced with United trailing 1-0 and in danger of allowing the La Liga outfit to erode their two-goal aggregate lead.
Their arrival breathed new life into United. Just ten minutes after replacing Alejandro Garnacho, Mount levelled on the night with a beauty.
United subsequently never looked back. His second goal in stoppage time was even more spectacular and was a special moment in an emphatic 7-1 aggregate success.
Given his injury issues since he joined United from Chelsea in 2023, it would be prudent not to get too carried away with Mount’s performance.
However, manager Ruben Amorim has made no secret of how highly he rates Mount and seems intent on making him an integral part of his project.
The 26-year-old has remained positive despite his numerous setbacks, and last night’s display highlighted that he is a hugely talented player.
If the midfielder can avoid injuries, there is still time for Mount to prove why United handed him the iconic number seven jersey.
