Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck is edging closer towards signing a new contract despite interest from elsewhere (h/t Sport Bild).
Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool and Arsenal have all been credited with an interest in the German international, who will be sidelined for around six months with a knee injury.
Newcastle United have also held talks with Schlotterbeck over a potential summer move.
However, the 25-year-old is expected to pen a new long-term extension until 2030, committing his future with Die Borussen.
Dortmund view Schlotterbeck as one of the central figures of their project for the foreseeable future.
Since moving to Signal Iduna Park in 2022, the former Freiburg star has enjoyed stellar growth as one of the prominent defenders in the Bundesliga.
It also helped him become a regular for the German national team. He has earned 20 caps.
Newcastle may have to turn their attention elsewhere as they continue to scour the market for defensive reinforcements.
The Magpies are looking to add depth to their ageing backline, with Dan Burn and Fabian Schar nearing the twilight of their careers.
Recurrent injury issues have hindered Sven Botman’s progress.
Newcastle are among the suitors for Bournemouth’s prodigious defender Dean Huijsen, whose €50 million release clause will become active this summer.
Although Newcastle may be able to provide Huijsen with Champions League football, they face stiff competition from Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid.
Newcastle also have Jarell Quansah on their radar, but Liverpool want to keep hold of him. They have also identified Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as a potential target.
