Barcelona and Spain wonderkid Lamine Yamal was crowned Breakthrough of the Year at the 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony held in Madrid.
The 17-year-old forward was honoured for his outstanding performances at both club and international levels over the past year.
Yamal beat a star-studded list of nominees to the Laureus Award, including sprinter Julien Alfred, swimmer Summer McIntosh, track star Letsile Tebogo, and NBA sensation Victor Wembanyama.
The Spanish international has been pivotal in Barca’s success story this season, bagging 14 goals and 22 assists in 46 games across all competitions.
The teenage prodigy is part of a Barca front three that has decimated nearly every opponent this season, including fierce rivals Real Madrid.
Yamal is spurring Barca’s La Liga title bid with six goals and 14 assists in 29 league games. He has also contributed four goals and four assists in 11 Champions League games.
The 17-year-old is a generational talent with the world at his feet.
He has the creativity, composure and confidence of a seasoned veteran and backs it up with his dazzling footwork and impressive numbers.
Yamal has been breaking records for fun since making his Barca debut.
Last year, he made history by becoming the youngest player to feature in a European Championship match at just 16.
He capped off the tournament by helping Spain lift the trophy a day after his 17th birthday.
Yamal has been hugging the spotlight since then and is a headline act in every Barca fixture.
He scored in the Spanish Supercopa final, helping Barca thrash Madrid 5-2 at the Alinma Stadium in Saudi Arabia.
That win put Barca in the mix for a historic quadruple.
They’ve reached the Copa del Rey final and the Champions League semi-final and are leading the way in the La Liga title race. With six games remaining, they are four points ahead of Madrid.
