Manchester United pulled off one of the most thrilling comebacks in their long history as they edged Lyon 7-6 on aggregate in the Europa League last night.
The Red Devils established a two-goal lead in the first half of the second leg, but allowed Lyon back into the game.
With ten minutes to go in extra-time, the Red Devils trailed 6-4 on aggregate. However, they dug deep to claim a remarkable victory on a wild night at Old Trafford.
Amorim eyes Europa League glory
Manager Ruben Amorim shared his goals for the rest of the season on TNT Sports, saying that winning the Europa League is the club’s primary aim.
“One moment can change a lot of things in the players’ minds,” Amorim said.
“We have to be really focused on Europa League and take risks sometimes with kids in the Premier League.
“Fans have to understand that we have to focus on the Europa League.”
When asked if his team could go all the way in the competition, Amorim admitted he was hopeful.
“Everybody in this moment believes it is possible – we need luck with injuries,” he said.
He also described his reaction to Harry Maguire’s late winner.
“The sounds of the stadium was the best ever,” he said. “Some people collect shirts, scarves, but I want to keep that sound, it’s the best sound in the world.”
Amorim also expressed sympathy for those who left early.
“I feel for the people who had to leave at 4-2 because of the traffic – they will be gutted,” he said.
“We know we are underperforming and deserve all the critics, but we have time to make something special of this season”
“We must recognise the context, we lack a lot of characteristics in our team, physicality is a problem.”
“When we play against European teams we can cope better with that, in Premier League we suffer a lot.”
Manchester United return to action when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers in the league on Sunday.
