As Eintracht Frankfurt prepare for the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur, all eyes are on rising star Hugo Ekitike.
The talented French striker, who is already making a significant impact in European football, is set to play a crucial role in Frankfurt’s quest for continental glory.
Experiencing the prestige of European competition firsthand, Ekitike is embracing the challenge and intensity of the Europa League.
“The big games, it’s crazy we know it’s a competition that’s taken seriously here,” he shares in this interview with UEFA Europa League’s Rise Up series, reflecting on the tournament that has put Frankfurt in the spotlight.
From setbacks to success
As the Europa League quarter-finals approach, Ekitike’s focus is sharper than ever. With his unwavering commitment to hard work and his drive to make his family proud, he is determined to make a lasting impact on Frankfurt’s campaign.
“I realise that family is really the most important thing for me, to see them happy,” Ekitike said. “That’s what drives my life. And why not win the cup with Eintracht Frankfurt? That would be wonderful.”
Ekitike’s journey has been characterised by resilience and determination. After making his mark at Vejle Boldklubben and Stade Reims, he earned a high-profile move to Paris Saint-Germain, where he played alongside legends Lionel Messi and Neymar.
Despite early success, his second season at PSG presented challenges that shaped his character. “In terms of longevity, I’m not going to say that my time in Paris was the happiest moment of my life,” he said. “But today, when I look back, I say to myself that maybe it was necessary.”
Driven by fans, powered by goals
He has rediscovered his passion and form with Frankfurt, making an immediate impact since his arrival in the 2024 winter transfer window.
With 19 goals and eight assists already to his name in the Bundesliga, UEFA Europa League and DFB-Pokal, Ekitike has played a key role in Frankfurt’s resurgence in European football. As he steps onto the Europa League stage, he remains determined to find success.
The support of Frankfurt’s passionate fanbase has been a crucial factor in the team’s European journey.
“It’s a crazy thing, this stadium,” he said. “Frankly, they’re incredible fans, and it makes you want to give it your all. They deserve it, and they never give up.”
