Ruthless Reds? Liverpool target Fulham win to edge closer to title glory

Liverpool will aim to tighten their grip on the Premier League title race when they travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Everton earlier in the day has opened the door for Arne Slot’s side to extend their lead at the top to 14 points with a win in London.

Wednesday’s hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton restored momentum after a difficult period in which Liverpool’s quadruple hopes crashed.#

Diogo Jota’s clinical strike proved the difference in the Merseyside derby, although the game was not without controversy.

James Tarkowski escaped punishment for a dangerous tackle on Alexis Mac Allister, but the PGMOL later admitted it should have been a red card.

While Slot welcomed the admission, he pointed out the obvious nature of the decision.

“It’s always good that if they think they made a mistake, they acknowledge that,” Slot said. “But it was so clear – so many pundits who are not Liverpool fans were clear about it as well.”

Despite recent exits from the Champions League and League Cup, Liverpool remain on course for the league title.

They are unbeaten in 26 league matches and have scored at least twice in 13 of their 15 away games this season.

The last time Liverpool lost a Premier League away game was almost exactly a year ago – against Everton in April 2024. Slot is not interested in calculating title permutations just yet.

“We are not working on theories about how many points,” he added. “We are taking the challenge of Fulham. Every game is a challenge.”

Injury issues persist for the visitors, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez still unavailable. Conor Bradley is doubtful, meaning Curtis Jones could again deputise at right-back.

“Curtis is an option because he did well,” Slot noted. “He has a skillset where he can defend and attack. Some want to stay in their comfort zone, but Curtis wants the challenge.”

Fulham, who held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at Anfield earlier this season, remain in the European conversation.

However, they have not beaten Liverpool at home in the Premier League since 2011 and have failed to win back-to-back home league matches all season.

For Liverpool, the equation is now simple – win and move 14 points clear of a faltering Arsenal. The title has not been won yet, but the door has creaked open a little wider.
