Aston Villa are flying under Unai Emery, and their dominant 3-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion last night was the latest evidence of their remarkable progress.
With an FA Cup semi-final and a Champions League quarter-final on the horizon, Villa are in the midst of a season that defies expectations.
Their latest triumph lifted them above Brighton in the table and within three points of Manchester City in fourth.
January signings have fuelled Villa’s rise. Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and Donyell Malen all scored at the Amex Stadium, underlining the effectiveness of the club’s recruitment strategy.
Rashford’s first Premier League goal for Villa set them on their way, continuing his resurgence after a difficult period at Manchester United.
“The most important thing is how he is feeling – how he is recovering confidence in himself,” Emery said. “But everything with him is getting progressively better, and it’s the same with Marco.”
Asensio has been the standout addition, delivering consistently despite limited starts. The three-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid has made a habit of stepping up in big moments.
His eight goals in just 10 appearances highlight the impact he has made since joining from Paris Saint-Germain.
Malen has had a quieter start but announced himself with a well-taken finish deep into stoppage time at Brighton.
His goal capped off another commanding performance from Villa, who now look well-placed to push for a top-four finish.
Beyond their attacking firepower, Villa have become more resilient defensively. They have kept consecutive clean sheets, something Emery has been striving for.
“We are performing in this direction defensively better and getting stronger,” he added. “Adding some individual skills and qualities in the squad, and progressively getting better.”
That ability to improve in all areas has defined Villa’s season. They are competing on multiple fronts and have shown the depth to cope with injuries and fixture congestion.
Ollie Watkins’ return from injury at Brighton provided another boost, adding to Emery’s growing list of options.
The challenge now is to maintain this momentum. Villa’s run-in is demanding, with games against Manchester City and Newcastle United still to come.
However, their January signings have given them the cutting edge needed to push further.
Villa’s smart recruitment, tactical discipline, and Emery’s leadership have made them a force to be reckoned with.
