Manchester United are in a strong position to reach the Europa League quarter-finals, but their tie with Real Sociedad is far from settled.
A 1-1 draw in San Sebastian leaves everything to play for at Old Trafford. Joshua Zirkzee’s goal gave United the lead, but a Mikel Oyarzabal penalty ensured the Spanish side remained firmly in the contest.
Ruben Amorim’s side have been inconsistent this season, but their European form has been solid. They are unbeaten and have won their last three home games in the Europa League.
United’s record at Old Trafford in this competition is also impressive. They have lost just one of their last 28 home matches in the Europa League, but that one defeat came against Sociedad in 2022.
Amorim is well aware of the importance of this match. His side are drifting in the Premier League, and Europa League success could be their best route to Champions League football next season.
The manager has accepted responsibility for the club’s struggles. “Everyone is underperforming – myself and the players,” he admitted.
“We can always change that, and I include myself in that part of underperforming.”
Sociedad also need to win this competition to reach next season’s Champions League. Their domestic form has been poor, with three consecutive La Liga defeats leaving them 11th in the table.
They have struggled away from home, losing six of their last eight matches. However, they have reason to believe they can upset United, having avoided defeat on their last two visits to Old Trafford.
United will be without Lenny Yoro and Harry Maguire. Manuel Ugarte is back in the squad, but Mason Mount remains unavailable.
Amorim remains focused on the present, despite the club unveiling plans for a new 100,000-seater stadium.
“It is in the future – five years from now – so we have to focus on the present,” he added. “I am really excited to win things at Old Trafford.”
That task starts on Thursday night. United must take control of this tie. If they fail, their season could be heading towards a disappointing end.
