Liverpool have received a massive injury boost ahead of their Champions League last-16 second-leg tie against Paris Saint-Germain as Cody Gakpo has returned to training.
Gakpo has returned to training after missing the last two matches and was spotted training at the AXA Training Centre in Kirkby during an open session as Liverpool prepared for the game.
The Dutch forward’s absence was evident in Liverpool’s first-leg performance against PSG.
The Reds struggled to create chances throughout the game, although Harvey Elliott’s late goal secured a surprise victory.
Gakpo’s return comes at a crucial point in the season as Liverpool push for success on multiple fronts.
The 24-year-old has been in superb form, registering 16 goals and five assists across all competitions this season.
His performances have been vital to Arne Slot’s side, and his availability will be a big boost going into the second leg for Liverpool.
Slot had confirmed Gakpo’s unavailability for the match against Southampton. The Dutchman was deemed unfit to play, and Liverpool missed his presence on the pitch.
Gakpo’s return is a huge injury boost for Liverpool
Gakpo’s return creates a new headache for PSG manager Luis Enrique. The Dutch forward offers a different threat compared to Luis Diaz.
His strength and ability to drift into the center-forward role make him hard to mark. He can also play effectively from the wings, adding variety to Liverpool’s attacking structure.
PSG successfully contained Diaz in the first leg, but keeping Gakpo quiet will be a different challenge.
His ability to cut inside and make runs behind the defence could stretch PSG’s backline, creating more space for Mohamed Salah and other attackers.
Liverpool now have quality options on both wings with Gakpo available. This could force PSG to be more cautious in their approach, reducing their ability to attack freely.
Gakpo’s return is also a boost for the League Cup final against Newcastle United this weekend. The Magpies will pose a tough challenge, so having Gakpo fit adds depth to the squad.
