Manchester United are set for a busy summer transfer window. There could be several out-of-favour players heading for the exit door.
Manager Ruben Amorim has admitted there will be plenty of activity in multiple press conferences.
The Times claims Victor Lindelof is ‘expected’ to leave the Red Devils when his contract expires at the end of the ongoing season.
The centre-back is a target for former club Benfica. They consider him as a replacement for Nicolas Otamendi, who is on River Plate’s radar.
Lindelof has fond memories of his five-year spell with the Portuguese outfit and is interested in returning to the Estadio da Luz this summer.
United are poised to offload Lindelof on a free transfer
The 30-year-old was a rotational player under manager Erik ten Hag for the last two seasons, but his playing time has been drastically reduced this term.
It was anticipated that Lindelof could get more minutes under Amorim, considering the duo played together at Benfica. The Portuguese tactician has done him no favours.
Despite playing with a back three, Amorim has been reluctant to start the Swede.
The 40-year-old has preferred Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui over him in central defence.
Lindelof came on in the second half of the FA Cup fifth round tie against Fulham in place of Yoro. He is unlikely to start against Real Sociedad midweek.
Maguire was substituted with a knock last weekend, but he is anticipated to be fit.
United should part ways with Lindelof. It makes no sense to keep a player who does not feature in the manager’s plans going forward.
The club will free up their annual wage bill by £6.2 million with the defender’s exit.
